When we renovated our home, one of the biggest decisions we faced was whether to install bifold doors or large sliding doors.

It’s a question I hear frequently from homeowners planning extensions and renovation projects. Both options can transform a space, increase natural light and strengthen the connection between indoors and outdoors, but they create very different experiences.

For us, the answer was simple: large sliding doors.

The reason wasn’t because bifold doors aren’t beautiful. It came down to how we wanted to live in the space every day.

Why We Chose Sliding Doors

One of the things I value most in a home is the connection to the garden and surrounding landscape.

Our garden is one of the features we enjoy most about our property, and I didn’t want anything interrupting that view.

Large sliding doors allowed us to maximise the amount of glass and minimise the amount of frame. The result is a much cleaner, more contemporary appearance with uninterrupted views across the garden.

Even when the doors are closed, the garden feels like part of the room.

That visual connection has a huge impact on how the space feels throughout the year.

And if we’re honest about life in the UK, most of the time we’re looking at the garden rather than sitting in it.

While the ability to fully open an entire wall sounds appealing, the reality is that our climate means we spend far more days admiring the garden from indoors than enjoying it with the doors folded back.

Because of that, preserving the view became more important than maximising the opening.

The Advantages of Sliding Doors

Sliding doors have become increasingly popular in contemporary renovations and new-build projects, and it’s easy to see why.

The biggest advantage is the amount of glazing they offer.

Modern sliding door systems can accommodate very large panes of glass with incredibly slim sightlines, creating a sleek and elegant appearance.

Benefits of sliding doors include:

  • Larger uninterrupted glass panels

  • Better views of the garden and landscape

  • Slimmer frames and cleaner aesthetics

  • Excellent natural light levels

  • Contemporary architectural appearance

  • Easier furniture placement as doors don’t project into the room

For homeowners looking to create a calm, light-filled interior, sliding doors can be a fantastic choice.

The Advantages of Bifold Doors

That said, bifold doors remain popular for good reason.

Their biggest advantage is the ability to open up almost the entire width of an opening.

When fully folded back, the boundary between inside and outside almost disappears.

This can be particularly appealing if you love entertaining or if your garden and patio are used regularly throughout the warmer months.

Benefits of bifold doors include:

  • Large clear opening when fully open

  • Strong indoor-outdoor connection

  • Ideal for entertaining

  • Good flexibility with multiple opening configurations

  • Can create a dramatic effect in kitchen-dining spaces

For families who host regularly or use their outdoor spaces extensively, bifolds can be the perfect solution.

What About Cost?

Cost is often a significant factor when choosing between the two.

Many homeowners assume bifolds are always the cheaper option, but it isn’t quite that straightforward.

Generally speaking, standard bifold door systems tend to be less expensive than premium large-format sliding doors.

As a rough guide:

  • Mid-range aluminium bifold doors often start from around £1,500–£2,500 per metre.

  • Large sliding door systems typically start from around £2,000–£4,000+ per metre depending on specification.

  • Premium minimal-frame sliding systems can cost considerably more.

The reason sliding doors are often more expensive is because they require larger glass units, more sophisticated engineering and stronger structural support to accommodate the weight of the glass.

However, costs vary enormously depending on manufacturer, frame material, glazing specification and installation requirements.

When comparing quotations, it’s important to look beyond the headline price and consider what you’re actually getting in terms of sightlines, performance, aesthetics and long-term enjoyment.

Thinking Beyond Cost

One thing I’ve learned through renovating properties over the years is that the cheapest option isn’t always the best value.

Instead, I encourage clients to think about how they will experience the space every day.

Questions worth asking include:

  • What will you spend more time doing: looking at the garden or walking into it?

  • How important is uninterrupted glazing?

  • Do you entertain frequently?

  • What style of architecture are you creating?

  • How much natural light do you want to maximise?

  • How important are slim sightlines?

The answers to those questions often make the decision much clearer.

There Is No Right or Wrong Answer

One of the biggest lessons from any renovation project is that every design decision should come back to how you actually live.

It’s easy to be influenced by trends or what everyone else seems to be doing, but the best homes are always the ones designed around the people living in them.

For our family, sliding doors were absolutely the right choice.

They maximise natural light, preserve our view of the garden and create a calm connection to the landscape beyond.

Every day, even when it’s raining outside, the room feels brighter, more open and more connected to nature.

Would bifold doors have worked? Absolutely.

But for the way we live, large sliding doors made more sense.

And that’s the beauty of good design.

There isn’t a right or wrong answer.

There’s simply the answer that works best for your home, your lifestyle and the way you want your space to feel.
