A friend of mine recently inherited the most stunning mid-century sideboard — beautifully kept, full of detail, and instantly the kind of piece that can anchor a room. 🖤

I may feature modern design daily, but my love for interiors actually began with antiques. Back in the day, I’d spend hours wandering through antique shops, searching for that one special piece — something with history, craftsmanship, and character. I loved imagining where it had been before, and how it could be reimagined in a fresh, modern home. That balance between old and new has always been at the heart of my design approach.

When you inherit furniture, you’re not just given an object — you’re given a story. The challenge (and joy) lies in weaving that story into your home in a way that feels authentic and beautifully integrated. Whether it’s a sideboard, a dining table, or a classic armchair, the key is to let it shine without feeling dated or out of place.

So how do you design around a statement piece? Here are my go-to steps:

✔️ Let it lead — Start by giving the piece prominence. Position it where it can truly be appreciated and allow it to set the tone for the space.

✔️ Build a palette — Draw inspiration from its materials or tones — the grain of the wood, the patina of the metal, or the texture of the fabric — to guide your colour choices for walls, flooring, and accessories.

✔️ Layer with contrast — Balance heritage with modernity. Pair vintage furniture with clean lines, sleek lighting, or contemporary art to create visual tension and freshness.

✔️ Keep it balanced — Avoid overcrowding. Give the piece breathing room so the craftsmanship and design details can take centre stage.

The result is a space that feels both personal and timeless — a perfect reflection of your own story, layered with the memories of those who came before you.

👉 Do you have an inherited piece you’ve designed a space around? I’d love to hear how you made it your own.
