✨ Dining Room Renovation ✨

When I design, I always start by looking for what’s already beautiful in a space and build around it. This dining room hadn’t been touched since the 1960s — old wallpaper, tired carpet, and an untouched fireplace (which I shared more about earlier this week). It had so much potential hiding beneath the surface. Here’s how I brought it into the present while keeping its original character intact.
1️⃣ Carpet removal
Always the most exciting part of a renovation — you never quite know what you’ll uncover. Luckily, beneath the layers of worn carpet were gorgeous original wooden floors just waiting to be restored.
2️⃣ Fresh white paint
Not essential, but a lifesaver if you’re living through the renovation. A coat of crisp white instantly brightens the space, hides imperfections, and makes it feel fresh again (especially helpful if the house has that “old house smell”).
3️⃣ Make it livable
Renovations take time, and it’s important to enjoy your home while the work’s in progress. Hang a few art pieces or add temporary lighting — small touches that make the space feel welcoming, even mid-renovation. Just remember to remove them before the real dust starts!
4️⃣ Rewiring
Not the most glamorous stage, but essential. It’s a big job and disruptive, but getting it done early prevents issues later. With a little help from family, we managed to make it more manageable (and saved on costs, too).
5️⃣ New windows
All the single glazing was replaced with sleek black aluminium frames — a small detail that completely modernised the look and brought in more warmth and light.
6️⃣ Radiators
Out went the old, bulky radiators, and in came modern matt black designs that blend seamlessly into the room’s aesthetic while providing efficient heating.
7️⃣ Floors
This was one stage I handed over to the professionals — and it was worth every penny. The floors were sanded and finished with Osmo Oil for a beautifully clear, matt finish that feels both natural and refined.
8️⃣ Colour
The final layer: Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone. It’s one of my favourite shades for its soft, timeless feel — warm enough to add depth, but neutral enough to complement any interior style.
And finally, the transformation was complete — a dining room that feels modern yet timeless, a space made to gather in and enjoy every day. 🖤
👉 Would you have kept the original wallpaper, or ripped it straight out?
